Did You Know?It is often referred to as the Granite City, because more than half of its buildings are built from Aberdeen’s Rubislaw Quarry granite. Until its decline in the mid-20th century, the quarry exported granite all over Britain. The Aberdeen area has the largest number of whiskey distilleries of any whisky producing area in Scotland. Many of the 17 distilleries are open to visitors. Famous Aberdonians include: architect Archibald Simpson, footballer Denis Law, golfer Paul Lawrie and singers Emeli Sande and Annie Lennox. During the 1800s, Aberdeen was a global powerhouse in the production of envelopes. Cairngorms National Park near Aberdeen has five of the UK’s six highest mountains. The park is twice the size of the Lake District and features huge forests, waterfalls and abundant wildlife. It's is home to Scotland's oldest daily newspaper, The Press and Journal. Originally called the Aberdeen Journal, it launched way back in 1747. Scots poet William Forsyth is just one of many notable figures who has sat in the editor's chair over the years. Sir Winston Churchill, recently voted the Greatest Briton of all time, was granted the Freedom of the City in 1946. The Brig o’Balgowne near Seaton Park is Aberdeen’s and Scotland’s oldest bridge. Construction started in the late 13th century and was competed in 1320. At Pittodrie, the home of Aberdeen Football Club, there have been a number of firsts. The first dugout (a sunken shelter at the side of the football field where staff and team members can sit during the game) was invented and installed there in 1931. In 1978, Pittodrie became the first all seated football stadium in Scotland. Also, the Dandy Dons are the only Scottish football team who have won 2 European trophies, winning both the European Super Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983!
