Burnley Leasing Did You Know?Burnley was one of the primary mill towns in Lancashire during the industrial revolution. It became the main center of engineering and appeared as one of the largest producers of cotton cloth in the world. The name Burnley is believed to have been derived from Brun Lea, meaning "meadow by the River Brun. You can find the development of royal forest and manor houses in Burnley since the medieval period. It also has various farming hamlets. It has been for 700 years since it was called a market town. Following the Roman period, the area became part of the kingdom of Rheged, and then the kingdom of Northumbria. Local place names Padiham and Habergham show the influence of the Angles, suggesting that some had settled in the area by the early 7th century. Another historic landmark in Burnley is Towneley Hall. For more than 500 years, the Towneley family lived inside the house. Prior to that, they had turned out in a selection of kits, ranging from green to black and amber. The 1956 FA Cup fourth-round tie with Chelsea is one of the longest in history as the pair drew 1-1 twice, then 0-0, the 2-2, before a 2-0 Chelsea win in the fifth game finally settled it. Stone Age flint tools and weapons have been found on the moors around the town, as have numerous tumuli, stone circles, and some hill forts, and Castercliff, which dates from around 600 BC. The 18th century also saw the rapid development of coal mining on the Burnley Coalfield: the drift mines and shallow bell-pits of earlier centuries were replaced by deeper shafts, meeting industrial as well as domestic demand in Nelson, Colne & Padiham, and by 1800 there were over a dozen pits in the modern-day centre of the town alone. Burnley is called as the Most Enterprising Area in the UK in 2013. The title was given to the town from UK Government after it awarded the town with an Enterprising Britain Award.
