Croydon is a large town in South London, it expanded during the Middle Ages as a market town and a centre for charcoal production, leather tanning and brewing. The London Borough of Croydon was formed in 1965.

The name Croydon comes from Crogdene or Croindone, named by the Saxons in the 8th century when they settled here.

St Mary’s the Blessed Virgin Church in Addington was founded in approximately 1080 and is the oldest public building still in use in the borough. In the early 1800s the building became known as Addington Palace and went on to be the official second home for six Archbishops of Canterbury.

The Tudor King of England ( King Henry VIII  ) is known perhaps predominantly for his numerous wives and savage beheading of a couple of them. He courted Catharine of Aragon when she was living in Croydon following the death of Prince Arthur, her first husband.

From 1920, for everyone flying oversees from the UK there voyage started at Croydon Airport. It was the birthplace of air traffic control, boasted the world’s first ever air traffic control tower and was even the site of multiple world-breaking flights.

London Croydon Airport was the UK’s first international airport. Celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, John F Kennedy and Rita Hayworth travelled through, Winston Churchill took flying lessons there and Amy Johnson took off from Croydon in May 1930 and became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. The airport, now grade II listed, has the world’s oldest air traffic control tower.

Films shot in Croydon include The Da Vinci Code, Batman – The Dark Knight Rises, Iron Man 3 and 28 Days Later. St George’s Walk was also the set for an upcoming episode of Netflix’s popular TV show, Black Mirror, filmed in Spring 2018.

Famous Croydonians include film director David Lean (Brief Encounter, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago), model Kate Moss, singer Kirsty MacColl, TV stars Noel Fielding and Sue Perkins and grime star Stormzy.

Home of Premier League club Crystal Palace for nearly 100 years, Selhurst Park is the local team venue for many Croydon residents.
