Did You Know?Farnborough is a town in north east Hampshire, England, part of the borough of Rushmoor and the Farnborough/Aldershot Built-up Area. Farnborough was founded in Saxon times and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Farnborough is the home of St. Michael's Abbey. The Imperial Crypt there is the resting place of Napoleon III (1808–1873), Emperor of the French, and his wife, Eugénie de Montijo, (1826–1920) and their son, Napoléon, Prince Imperial. An inn, The Tumble Down Dick Pub has been present on the A325 Farnborough Road since the 17th century. It was reputedly connected to Richard Cromwell, and was the central focus of the town before its 19th-century refocus toward North Camp and the town centre proper's 20th-century development. Farnborough Airport has an extensive and impressive aviation history. It was the first operational airfield in the UK, established in 1905 as a balloon factory for the Royal Engineers, and was the site of the UK's first powered flight on 5 October 1908, when Samuel Cody took off in his British Army Aeroplane No 1. TAG Farnborough Airport began its first civil aviation operations in 1989. It had been owned by the military throughout World War I, World War II and the Cold War before eventually being deemed surplus to military requirements in 1991. In the early 20th century, Farnborough became home of the Army Balloon Factory and later the Royal Aircraft Establishment — from which point the town’s aeronautical heritage would grow and grow! In 1885, the exiled Empress Eugenie, widow of Emperor Napoleon III of France, moved to Farnborough Hill House. She is now buried alongside Napoleon and their son at St Michael’s Abbey in Farnborough.
