Did You Know?Hastings is a town and borough in the county of East Sussex, within the historic county of Sussex, on the south coast of England. The town is located 24 mi (39 km) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 mi (85 km) south east of London, and has an estimated population of 90,254. Actually the battle was fought some six to seven miles from Hastings, near the town now known as Battle, probably at Senlac Hill. William the Conquerer founded Battle Abbey as penance for the bloodshed at the battle. King Harold of England, who was slain at the Battle of Hastings, had a tattoo over his heart that read: “Edith and England”. The Bayeux Tapestry, telling the history of the Battle, is 230 feet long and was commissioned by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and Earl of Kent who was the half-brother of William the Conqueror. Hastings won a Platinum Loo of the Year Award and an Individual Attendant of the Year Award in 2013 for its public toilets at the Stade beach. The history of Hastings may date back as far as the 5th century. The Haestingas were Anglo-Saxon followers of a Saxon warlord called Haesta. Like many coastal towns, the population of Hastings grew significantly as a result of the construction of railway links and the fashionable growth of seaside holidays during the Victorian era. In 1801, its population was a mere 3,175; by 1831, it had reached over ten thousand; by 1891, it was almost sixty thousand. Throughout the year many annual events take place in Hastings, the largest of which being the May Day bank holiday weekend, which features a Jack-in-the-Green festival (revived since 1983), and the culmination of the Maydayrun—tens of thousands of motorcyclists having ridden the A21 to Hastings THE HASTINGS CAR LEASING SPECIALIST Smart Lease is a trading name of Leaseline Vehicle Management Ltd.
