Did You Know?Hertford is a historic market town 20 miles north of London in the East Hertfordshire countryside, an area often regarded as one of the most desirable in the UK. With a population of 27,000, the town features excellent schools and a healthy economy. The town dates back to the 10th Century and lies at the confluence of four rivers. Hertford was a fortified Saxon town built by King Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, in 912. From the Saxon earthworks, designed to resist the Danes, the Castle grew after the Norman Conquest to become a royal fortress and royal residence, under a governor appointed by the King. Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, and is also a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. The town has a population of approximately 27,000, according to the 2012 census. Formerly a major market for corn and other agricultural produce, Hertford owed its importance to proximity to London which resulted in lucrative trading and provision of a base for royalty and nobility to enjoy country life and sport. Hertford's Parliament Square is so-called because in 1563, Parliament moved to Hertford in order to escape the Great Plague of London. The first historical record of Hertford was in the year 673 when it hosted the first Synod of the English Church. Hertford is the subject of much speculation and conspiracy theories on the subject of the Knights Templar. It has long been rumoured that the town might be one of the places where the Order hid its treasure, and some say it’s even the last resting place of the Holy Grail.
