Hertfordshire Leasing
Did You Know?Hertfordshire is one of the home counties located close to London in South East England, prominent towns in the area include Herford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead. Hertfordshire’s location makes it convenient to see both London and the South East region. George Bernard Shaw is said to have moved to the village of Ayot St Lawrence in Hertfordshire because, concerned about his health, he noted an epitaph on the grave of a 70 year old woman there saying ‘Her Time Was Short’? He arrived when he was 50, and his death at 94 was brought about by a fall while pruning a tree At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, marathon athletes left Wembley Stadium and raced through areas of Hertfordshire, including Radlett and Elstree, before returning to the stadium. It was a dramatic finish as the top three battled it out to come home within 42 seconds of one another. Hertfordshire, though a small county, has little geographical unity. The southern parts are within the orbit of London and discharge commuters into Euston, St Pancras, King's Cross, and Liverpool Street. The north retains quiet spots like Gaddesden in the west and Wyddial in the east. The magnetic attraction of London has meant that, since Roman times, communications have run north–south, with Akeman Street, Watling Street, and Ermine Street as the main thoroughfare. In the immediate pre-Roman period, Hertfordshire was part of the territory of the Catuvellauni, whose chief, Cassivellaunus, opposed Caesar's expeditions. His grandson Cunobelinus seems to have moved his capital from Verulamium, near St Albans, to Colchester, ruling over the Trinovantes. Caratacus, his son, led a protracted resistance to the Roman invasion of ad 43, was driven west, captured, and died a prisoner in Rome. Apart from King Edgar’s donated land to Ely Abbey and Domesday Book record, Hatfield in Hertfordshire has been populated around for thousands of years. According to few historians, Hatfield was habituated with earliest settlers who introduced agriculture, defence, and war. The Domesday Book survey of 1086-87 only confirms the existence of Hatfield.
