Did You Know?In 1895 the Northern Rugby Football Union, based in Huddersfield, split from England’s established Rugby Football Union following a payment dispute between the union and players from northern clubs. Huddersfield has a strong Victorian history as a textile manufacturing centre and market town. Many of its most historic properties are still standing, with over 200 listed buildings in and around Huddersfield the town centre. After World War One, factories in the town built the LSD 3-wheel car. It is now commonly known as the rarest car in Britain. Each year, the world’s largest contemporary music festival takes place in the town, aptly titled the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. A railway station to boast about! The railway station in Huddersfield dates back to 1950 and is nestled in St Georges Square. The station has been described as “the most splendid station façade in England” by Sir John Betjeman, wherein 2009, the station also underwent a £4million restoration, which landed it an architectural award. Rugby League was invented in Huddersfield in 1895 following a dispute over payments to players. The sport is still prominent in the town thanks to Huddersfield Giants who play their trade in the Super League. Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for his roles in Star Trek and X-Men, grew up just around the corner in the little town of Mirfield. He remains loyal to his local roots and was the Vice Chancellor of Huddersfierld University. The town is known for its industrial heritage, particularly in textiles and engineering. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal runs through the town and is a popular attraction for boaters and walkers. The Victoria Tower on Castle Hill, a prominent landmark, was built in honor of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
