Hull Leasing Did You Know?Kingston upon Hull, usually abbreviated to Hull, is a port city and unitary authority in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It lies upon the River at its confluence with the Humber Estuary. The town of Wyke on Hull was founded late in the 12th century by the monks of Meaux Abbey as a port from which to export their wool. Renamed Kings-town upon Hull in 1299. As sail power gave way to steam, Hull's trading links extended throughout the world. Docks were opened to serve the frozen meat trade of Australia, New Zealand and South America. The city was also the centre of a thriving inland and coastal trading network, serving the whole of the United Kingdom Ye Olde White Harte pub on Silver Street in Hull is believed to have played a key role in the start of the English Civil War. In the room now known as the Plotting Parlour, the decision was reputedly taken in 1642 to refuse Charles I entry to Hull. Hull is home to The Deep, which calls itself the “world’s only submarium”. Visitors may see its 3,500 fish, including sharks and manta rays, while walking under the water through a viewing tunnel. On the popular music scene in Hull, in the 1960s, Mick Ronson of the Hull band Rats worked closely with David Bowie and was heavily involved in production of the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Ronson later went on to record with Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Morrissey and the Wildhearts. Hull is the only place in the country not to have BT provide its telephone services. The Hull Telephone Department was launched in 1904, later becoming Kingston Communications. For 115 years, they have set Hull apart – and been a symbol of the city’s determination to do things differently.
This one is probably what we’re most well-known for outside of the city. Not only is the Hull accent very distinctive from the accents of our other Yorkshire neighbours, but we have some of our own unique words too. Some of our favourites are “maftin” (warm/hot), croggy (lift on a bicyle) and the classic “er ner its sner” (look, it’s snowing). In the 1980s, Hull groups such as the Red Guitars, the Housemartins and Everything but the Girl found mainstream success, followed by Kingmaker in the 1990s.Paul Heaton, former member of the Housemartins went on to front the Beautiful South.
