Did You Know? The Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell was formed on 1 April 1974 as an amalgamation of the county boroughs of Warley and West Bromwich. The borough was named after Sandwell Priory, the ruins of which are located in Sandwell Valley. The local council has considered changing its name in the past over confusion outside the West Midlands as to the whereabouts of the borough, and in June 2002 a survey of borough residents was carried out. Sixty-five percent of those surveyed favoured retaining the name Sandwell. Legendary musician and founder of Led Zeppelin Robert Plant was born in West Bromwich. Sandwell used to be a popular hotspot for car cruising. In 2015 a High Court order was introduced to ban car cruising in the area. An extension has been secured to run until at least 2021. Sandwell is home to West Bromwich Albion, one of the country’s most historic football clubs – founder members of the Football League and the only club ever to achieve promotion in the same season as winning the FA Cup in 1931/32. Jack Judge, the composer of the World War I song ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ was born in Oldbury in Sandwell. The first branch of Lloyds Bank opened outside Birmingham was the TSB Bank branch in Oldbury town centre that was opened in 1864 to finance local businesses like Albright and Wilson. Metalworking, especially nail making, in the area dates from the Middle Ages, and coal was mined in the 13th century. Sandwell’s main industrial growth, based on local coal and ironstone reserves, followed the coming of the canals in the 18th century. Ironworks were established, including the famous Soho Manufactory (1761) at Smethwick, which was associated with the engineers James Watt and Matthew Boulton. At the 2011 census, the borough of Sandwell had a population of 309,000 and an area of 86 square kilometres.
