West Bromwich is a large town with a population almost totalling 200,000. The town increased dramatically following the discovery of coal in the early 1900's, ensuring that the town grew rapidly as an industrial centre, with industries such as spring, gun and nail making developing

West Bromwich has a fantastic selection of historic buildings. The most famous being Oak House on Oak Road which is a 16th century large timber framed Yeoman's house which has been carefully restored and now houses a museum offering information on the Tudor times.

Engineering and chemicals are important to the town's economy, as it played a crucial part in the Industrial Revolution during the 19th century and still retains many manufacturing jobs to this day, despite a steady nationwide decline in this sector since the 1970s.

The Latin motto on West Bromwich coat of arms translates as "Work Conquers All".

West Bromwich was first mentioned as Bromwic ('broom village') in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is believed that it may have originally been part of the Handsworth parish.

The town is famous for its football club, West Bromwich Albion. The club was founded in 1878 and in 1888 it became one of the 12 founder members of the Football League. It won the league championship in 1920 and has won the FA Cup five times.

The town suffered significant air raid damage in World War II, with 58 civilian deaths, most in the raids of 19 November 1940 around Oak Road and Lombard Street to the west of the town centre.
