It's one of the UK's best seaside resorts, with sandy beaches, a traditional pier, and both traditional and contemporary things to see and do. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was most famous for her 1818 novel, Frankenstein, and was married to the romantic poet Percy Shelley. Bournemouth has two very fine piers. The Boscombe Pier was built in 1889 and renovated in 2009. It is 230 metres long and is a Grade II-listed site. It is also an award-winning pier.
