Halifax Leasing Did You Know?Halifax is a minster and market town in the metropolitan borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. It is the commercial, cultural and administrative centre of the borough, and the headquarters of Calderdale Council. It is well known as a centre of England's woollen manufacture from the 15th century onward, which dealt through the Halifax Piece Hall. It is internationally famous for its Mackintosh chocolate and toffee (now owned by Nestlé) The architect who designed Halifax Town Hall in 1863 was also responsible for designing the Houses of Parliament. The town hall was his last major commission and was completed a few years after his death. Its common knowledge in Calderdale that Halifax Gibbet was an early guillotine that allowed the Lord of the Manor to decapitate thieves but did you know that it claimed its last victim in April 1650. Wainhouse Tower is the tallest folly in the world standing at 84m high and has 403 steps to take you to the top. It was built in the 19th century by John Edward Wainhouse and is one of the areas most prominent landmarks. The name of Halifax comes from the Old English halh-gefeaxe, meaning area of coarse grass in the nook of land. There are several other stories on how the town got its name but this one is the most accepted. Despite being an iconic landmark in the town since the 15th century, Halifax Minster only achieved Minster status in 2009. The Grade I listed church was known as Parish Church of St John the Baptist. Halifax has a long history of confectionery thanks to the Mackintosh who introduced toffees and later created Quality Street. The original shop was located at 53 King Cross Street, which was demolished in 1969. Dean Clough is a well known area of Halifax and was originally built in the 1840s to 1860s for Crossleys Carpets. At the time it was the worlds largest carpet factory at half a mile long with 1,250,000 square feet. Halifax has a cat that likes to play tricks! But don’t worry, it’s not a real cat; it’s a mechanical one in a local bank! In the olden days, if you wanted to put money in the bank, you’d give your coins to this cat, and it would take them with its paw. Now, that’s a quirky way to save!
