The name Hastings is derived from the Old English tribal name Hæstingas, meaning the constituency/followers of Hæsta. 2) The Battle of Hastings, on October 14 1066, took place 8 miles to the north at Senlac Hill. It happened because King Edward died, leaving the English throne without an heir.

Hastings is most famous for the battle that took place there in 1066 between King Harold's English and William the Conqueror's Normans. The town lent its name to the battle, although the battle took place in nearby.

After William’s victory French became the language of the king’s court and this, blended with Anglo-Saxon English, eventually evolved into the modern English language; hence many French words are used in common parlance.

The French duke had two weeks in between landing on the Sussex coast and the Battle of Hastings to prepare his forces for a confrontation with the English army. Harold and his troops, on the other hand, had been busy fighting another claimant to the throne in the north of England just three days ahead of William’s arrival.

The Battle of Hastings saw the death of King Harold and the birth of a new ruling dynasty as the Anglo-Saxons made way for the Normans. The battle lasted from 9 in the morning until dusk and was unusually long for a medieval fight, as such battles were often over within an hour.

Hastings Castle is an 11th century motte-and-bailey castle located in Hastings, East Sussex, England. It was first built in 1067 under William of Normandy as one of three structures he ordered upon arrival in the region, the other two located in Dover and Pevensey.

The Crowhurst Yew stands in the south of the churchyard, just off a path leading to St George's Church. It is reckoned to be over 1,300 years old, having been planted around 700 AD.

Hastings Castle was originally built from wood and then refortified with stone in 1070. Despite being on the receiving end of numerous attacks over the past thousand-plus years, an impressive amount of its original architecture and detail remain. The building’s layout starts with a North gate, dungeons located to its left thereafter.
