You can also spot a neo classical building called Lansdowne Crescent, which has been enlisted in Grade II. It was constructed in 1835 until 1838. The designer was William Thomas. The town was granted its ‘Royal’ status in 1838 by Queen Victoria, who had enjoyed her first ever overnight stay away from home in 1830 while still a princess. Royal patronage of this kind has only ever been handed to three towns – Royal Leamington Spa, Royal Tunbridge Wells and Royal Wootton Bassett. In July 1814, ‘The Royal Pump Room and Baths’ was built, the spa treatments that they provided were said to cure or relieve many disorders, such as stiff joints and also ‘the effects of gout and rheumatism and various paralytic conditions’. As a result of the spa resort, Leamington began to attract many wealthy and famous people, who all wanted to experience the magical qualities of the water. Following the 1951 Festival of Britain, Leamington held festivals of illuminations and concerts in Jephson Gardens. However, after complaints of loud music and voices, they were scrapped in 1961.
