You may argue that the show Peaky Blinders was staged in Birmingham, which rose to prominence shortly after the series debuted. The truth is that some scenes from this popular show were filmed in Manchester and Liverpool. The city served as an ideal setting for the show thanks to its stunning industrial background and this most certainly makes it one of the lesser-known yet fun facts about Manchester.

Manchester is renowned for its universities and for providing a supportive setting for learning, researching, and discovering. Ernest Rutherford realised the first time the atom was split at Manchester University. He was a university professor and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908 and made the first atomic split in 1917

They were destined to be together; they simply didn’t realise it yet. We’ve all heard of the brand ‘Rolls-Royce.’ Who would have guessed that such legendary identities would come together in Manchester? They met on May 4, 1904, in Manchester (that we know of), when Charles Rolls saw Henry Royce’s classic 10hp automobile, the first motor car Royce had developed and constructed himself, and realised immediately that he had discovered what he had been looking for.

Manchester was established by the Romans in AD 79. They positioned a fort near a crossing point on the River Medlock, in between two hills that according to them looked like boobs.

Chetham’s library, near Victoria Station, is the oldest public library in the English speaking world. It has been in continuous use since 1653 and holds 100,00 books including 60,000 published before 1851.

On the Manchester City Council’s coat of arms, the three stripes represent the three rivers running through the city: the River Irwell, the Irk, and the Medlock.

Manchester is the home to the world’s longest-running TV soap opera, Coronation Street. It started airing on December 9, 1960. It reached its 10,000th show on February 7, 2020, and is still airing today.

Manchester is considered the birthplace of indie music, having produced seminal bands such as The Hollies, Joy Division, New Order, The Stone Roses, Oasis, and The Smiths.

Manchester has one of Europe’s largest St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations, with Manchester Irish Festival festivities lasting a full week. Around 35% of Mancs have some Irish blood.

William Cowhere (1763–1816) of the Beefsteak Chapel in Greater Manchester founded the first vegetarian church. After his death, his followers created the Vegetarian Society in 1847, and there were more vegetarian restaurants in Victorian Manchester than there are today.

In 1887, construction of the Manchester Ship Canal started, and it opened in 1894. It was largest river navigation canal in the world at the time, connecting Manchester to the Irish Sea near Liverpool.

In November 2014, it was announced that Greater Manchester would receive a directly elected mayor. In 2017, Andy Burnham was elected as the first mayor of Greater Manchester
