National government policy since the 1930s has sought to diversify the industrial structure. Today Merseyside also has a thriving automobile industry. Chemical, biochemical, and pharmaceutical industries are increasingly important components of the local economy. Merseyside includes the historic port city of Liverpool and its wealth of historic and cultural attractions, there is a scenic coastline and beaches notably at Southport, New Brighton and West Kirby and plenty of open spaces allowing visitors to get away from it all and enjoy the best of the scenic countryside. Merseyside is located in North West England, prominent cities and towns in the area include Liverpool, Southport and St Helens. The location of Merseyside makes it a convenient place for visitors to explore England’s North West region and North Wales. Merseyside was designated as a "Special Review" area in the Local Government Act 1958, and the Local Government Commission for England started a review of this area in 1962, based around the core county boroughs of Liverpool/Bootle/Birkenhead/Wallasey. Merseyside was created on 1 April 1974 from areas previously parts of the administrative counties of Lancashire and Cheshire, along with the county boroughs of Birkenhead, Wallasey, Liverpool, Bootle, and St Helens. Following the creation, Merseytravel expanded to take in St Helens and Southport. All modern bicycles are descended from JK Starley’s Rover safety cycle, invented in Coventry in 1885. A decade later the city became the birthplace of the British motor industry, producing the first cars under licence from Gottlieb Daimler in Germany. It's also home to the Aintree Racecourse, which is perhaps best known for staging the infamous Grand National steeplechase each year. The course used is particularly demanding, with many competitors failing to complete the race. The Merseyside derby refers to a football match between Everton and Liverpool, the two primary clubs in Liverpool, England. Named after the county of Merseyside, in which Liverpool is located, it is the longest running top-flight derby in England and has been played continuously since the 1962–63 season.
