Peterborough Leasing Did You Know? There aren't many world first that have taken place in Peterborough but the world's first mini roundabout was built in the city in 1969. Designed by Frank Blackmore and located near London Road and Oundle Road, the design was written into government design manuals in 1975. It was called St Peters burgh, burgh being the Saxon word for a fortified settlement. The Abbot allowed the people of the nearby village to have a market and Peterborough was born. By 1000 AD, the settlement had grown into a modest-sized town, with its own Benedictine abbey and defensive wall. The town was known as Burh St. Peter, from which Peterborough is derived. Peterborough is primarily known for its historic cathedral, but you'll find additional history and modern family-friendly fun here, too. The local history is vast with one site offering the opportunity to step back into the Bronze Age. In 2018 Peterborough celebrated 900 years of its historic cathedral, it hosted its 41st annual beer festival and was temporarily home to Tim Peake's Soyuz spacecraft, which transported him to and from the International Space Station in 2015-2016. Stamford is lovely to walk around for a day of shopping, or to grab coffee or lunch, but avoid it on market days and during Burghley Horse Trials. Avoid Stamford, and the surrounding section of the A1, at all costs during the Burghley weekend. Peterborough Cathedral is one of the most intact large Norman churches in England and is renowned for its imposing early English Gothic West Front which, and Henry the Eighth’s first wife Katherine of Aragon is buried beneath its paving. It was ransacked in 1643 when Parliamentary soldiers took the city during the Civil War. By the 16th century, Peterborough had officially been named a city. Nevertheless, it remained more akin to a small town, with much of its economy revolving around the local wool industry. The museum building was a hospital at one point, among many other things, and is the most haunted place in the area. Everyone either knows someone who has seen a ghost there or has seen one themselves. A night out in Peterborough doesn't truly become a night out until you've drank pitchers through straws at the College Arms - who needs glasses? The Anglo-Saxon period saw the establishment of a monastery, Medeshamstede, which later became Peterborough Cathedral. In 2020 the built-up area subdivision had an estimated population of 179,349. In 2021 the Unitary Authority area had a population of 215,671. Henry VIII closed all the monasteries and abbeys in England. Peterborough Abbey was closed in 1539. However, in 1541 the abbey church was made a cathedral. Also in 1541, a school called the Kings school was founded. In 2018 Peterborough celebrated 900 years of its historic cathedral, it hosted its 41st annual beer festival and was temporarily home to Tim Peake's Soyuz spacecraft, which transported him to and from the International Space Station in 2015-2016.
