Southampton is one of the warmest and sunniest cities in the UK due to its Maritime Climate and sheltered position. Consequently, Southampton has held the highest recorded temperature in the UK for the month of June since 1976. Temperatures reached a staggering 35.6 °C (96.1 °F) on the 28th of the month. A really interesting fact about Southampton is that it was once well known for its thriving underground dance music scene! In fact, the famed Southampton underground nightclub, Junk, on London Road, had been nominated for the UK’s best small nightclub, and had hosted a range of some of the best acts in dance music. When you visit Southampton, make sure you head to the Bargate, the old north entrance to the city. It is the main and most impressive of all the town gates and the centre of town government.
