York is a walled city in northeast England that was founded by the ancient Romans. Its huge 13th-century Gothic cathedral, York Minster, has medieval stained glass and 2 functioning bell towers. The City Walls form a walkway on both sides of the River Ouse.

York is a city with a past. Its dark history is rife with yarns of ghosts, torture, and guts and gore. The International Ghost Research Foundation declared York the most haunted city in Europe. It has 500+ hauntings, and its bloody, volatile and violent history includes the Civil War, Conquest by the Normans and Viking Invasions.

The Golden Fleece pub, which is reported to be the most haunted pub in York, visitors are taken on a Ghost Hunt whilst listening to tales of the numerous hauntings and murders that have made this city so famous.

York has connections to Harry Potter. Not only was Diagon Alley based on a beautiful-cobbled street, The Shambles in York, which now actually houses a shop aptly named “The Shop That Can’t be Named”, but the first film in the Harry Potter franchise was filmed on location at the Steam Railway in North Yorks.

Some of the UK's family favourite chocolates started in York. The Rowntree factory opened in the 1800’s and can be thanked for training the founder of Cadbury, who then trained the founder of Bournville. If you were born in York and walk up to the top of Clifford’s Tower on a Sunday, you can shoot at a Scotsman with a bow and Arrow. One of history’s many forgotten laws, and not something we would advise but this is one of the most random little known facts about York that gives an insight into our city’s past.

York has over 365 pubs, one (or more) for each day of the year. The city also hosts the UK’s largest food festival, for 10 days each September.
