What comes to your mind when you think Basingstoke? Besides ti being the largest town in much-loved Hampshire, it’s also crammed full of wonderful secrets and history to be learned by visitors and residents alike.

In 2011, Basingstoke's population was 167,800. This was an increase of more than 15,000 in less than a decade. This was an increase of around 10 per cent, compared with 7.9 per cent for the South East and 7.8 per cent for England and Wales.

One of the many respected heritage sites located in Basingstoke is the spectacular Vyne house. This was built by understandably wealthy owners in the Tudor period and has since been maintained and managed by the National Trust and a range of donors.

Did you know that Basingstoke is home to the single largest colony of bats in the UK? Probably not!, It’s just one example of the fantastic wildlife located within and around the city. For those who love to know about the movements of the rich and famous, Basingstoke is your spot. The area has many connections to the best in the UK, ranging from notable public figures such as Channel 4 news anchor Alex Thompson all the way through to football star Tom Cleverly.

Thomas Burberry founded the Brand Burberry in Basingstoke 161 years ago, in 1856. He also had his original raincoat factory and shop in Winchester Road. Unfortunately, the shop was burnt down in ‘The Great Fire of Basingstoke’ in 1905*.

Rodney Trotter from the classic fictional British sitcom ‘Only Fools & Horses’ attended “Basingstoke Art College” but was expelled after just three weeks when he was caught smoking cannabis in a fellow student’s room!

Basingstoke is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The parish church of St Michael already existed and the town had a market and 3 mills. In 1214 market day was fixed by royal charter to take place on a Wednesday and has been so ever since.
