Canterbury Leasing Did You Know?Canterbury, a cathedral city in southeast England, was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, encircle its medieval centre with cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. Canterbury as a city has it's origins in the Roman settlement of Durovernum Cantiacorum, established in the first century AD after the Roman invasion of 43 AD. The name was taken from the Cantiaci tribe that inhabited the area at the time of the Roman invasion. Warner bros wanted to use Canterbury cathedral in the Harry Potter films however they were refused as cathedral authorities were concerned by the 'pagan' theme. However Dartford Crossing did appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – part 1 depicting a dramatic chase scene with Death Eaters. Canterbury has several striking specimens of Oriental Plane – each with distortions to the swollen bark on the trunk which appear to be (but are not) seriously diseased. One such tree can be seen in the cathedral precincts, not far from the Son of Man statue. The Parrot pub was Simple Simon's until 2008 but was originally called St Radigund's Hall, a typical wealden hall house. This is the oldest pub and one of the oldest buildings in Canterbury, dating from the 15th century and named after the monks of St Radigund at Bradsole near Dover. After his consecration at Arles as bishop of the English, Augustine returned to Canterbury, founded the Abbeys of SS. Peter and Paul (known after his death as St. Augustine's Abbey), and established the cathedral. Canterbury city walls are a sequence of defensive walls built around the city in Kent, England. The first city walls were built by the Romans, probably between 270 and 280 AD. These walls were constructed from stone on top of an earth bank. Main construction periods 1066 to 1817. A square, ruined, late 11th century tower is all that remains of the former Canterbury Castle. The Castle was constructed in the 11th century in the south-west quarter of the city. Durovernon was the Roman Name for Canterbury. The Romano-British town covered about 100 acres. Evidence has been found of Roman military timber buildings, and also of a large Gallo-Belgic oppidum on the same site as the later Romano-British town.
