From its roots as a Roman fort close to the very edge of the Roman Empire its excellent transport links helped it become a prosperous market town in the Middle Ages serving north eastern Derbyshire and beyond. It may surprise you to learn that the Chesterfield sofa was invented back in the mid-1700s, when Lord Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, commissioned a piece of furniture for his guests to sit on. Rivalries. Chesterfield's geographical position means that the club holds many local derbies. Their main rival is considered to be the Nottinghamshire club Mansfield Town, with the club contending a number of fiery encounters. Chesterfield can be proud to be the birthplace of one of the most famous British politicians of the twentieth century. Barbara Betts, daughter of Annie and Frank, was born at 67 Derby Road in October 1910.. The Chesterfield Canal was opened in 1777 and was one of the last of the canals to be designed by James Brindley. The canal is 46 miles long and runs from the River Trent at West Stockwith in Nottinghamshire, passing through South Yorkshire. The Town Hall is situated on Rose Hill, Chesterfield, overlooking Shentall Gardens and the War Memorial. Construction of the building commenced in 1935 and was completed in 1938. The building was designed by Mr A J Hope of Messrs, Bradshaw, Gass and Hope. Chesterfield Parish Church is an Anglican church dedicated to Saint Mary and All Saints, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Building of the church began in 1234 AD, though the present church dates predominantly from the 14th century. The Chesterfield Canal was built between the years 1771 and 1777, although some sections were in use from 1775. The earliest canals were the Sankey, opened 1757 and the Bridgewater, opened 1761, extended to Runcorn on the Mersey by 1766 and the Trent and Mersey, built from 1766 to 1777. The Chesterfield Arms (named after the the Earls of Chesterfield whose family owned most of Bingham) was built as a coaching inn around 1750 when it was named 'The Royal Oak'.
