In the seventeenth century Darlington became noted for its woollen and linen industry and as a popular place of residence for members of the Society of Friends 'Quaker' faith. Quakers formed an influential and wealthy community in the town by the 1800s. Darlington started as an Anglo-Saxon settlement. The name Darlington derives from the Anglo-Saxon Dearthington, which seemingly meant 'the settlement of Deornoth's people', but by Norman times the name had changed to Derlinton. Darlington began as a Saxon village. It first appeared in writing in the early 11th century when it was called Dearthingtun. Its name was probably originally Deornoth ing tun. The town is Anglo-Saxon in origin, and its parish church of St. Cuthbert dates from the 12th century. In the 19th century textile industries were overshadowed by locomotive manufacture and railway repair work. The Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first passenger line. Darlington Football Club, nicknamed “The Quakers”, is a supporters-owned football club that plays in the Vanarama National League North. We have been at the heart of the community since we were formed in 1883. Darlington began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement on the River Skerne which is a northern tributary of the Tees. The town was later taken by the Danes and there are still many place names of Viking origin in its vicinity. In 1821 George Stephenson, who had built several steam engines to work in the Killingworth colliery, heard of Edward Pease's intention of building an 8-mile (12.9-km) line from Stockton on the coast to Darlington to exploit a rich vein of coal. The Darlington “Brick Train” was opened on Monday, 23rd June 1997 by Lord Palumbo of Walbrook is situated next to Morrisons on Morton Park Industrial Estate. Modelled on the 1938 record setting, 126mph steam locomotive “Mallard”. The market has a heritage stretching back over 1,000 years. Actress Ruth Gemmell is from Darlington too, as is actor Richard Hurndall. Poets Ian Hamilton and Ralph Hodgson are from this town. Michael Lee, the hard rock drummer from Little Angels.
