The town gives its name to the Battle of Hastings, which took place 8 mi (13 km) to the north-west at Senlac Hill in 1066. It later became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. In the 19th century, it was a popular seaside resort, as the railway allowed tourists and visitors to reach the town.

Hastings was a thriving fishing centre at the time of the Norman Conquest and today this seaside town still boasts Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet.  Far beneath the castle, the shingle-lined seashore is dotted with tall wooden huts.

Hastings is the site of what is probably the most famous battle in England's history. In popular imagination 1066 is the date of the last successful invasion of England, the year in which William, Duke of Normandy, defeated England's Saxon army, killed the king, Harold, and seized the throne.

The Stag is a 16th Century pub (the town's oldest) on the most historic street in Hastings Old Town. Our interior is cosy and quirky but far from old-fashioned: original beams, wooden floorsand log stoves.

The Carmen de Hastingae Proelio (Song of the Battle of Hastings) is a 20th-century name for the Carmen Widonis, the earliest history of the Norman invasion of England from September to December 1066, in Latin.

The first mention of Hastings is found in the late 8th century in the form Hastingas. This is derived from the Old English tribal name Hæstingas, meaning 'the constituency (followers) of Hæsta'.

1339 - The French land at Hastings, burning & looting the town. They overun the castle and plunder the rich houses. 1377 - The French return and again loot and pillage the town. Further damage is done when even more of the coast falls into the sea, taking more of the castle with it.

Hastings Pier was built in 1872. It suffered major storm damage in 1990 and 95 per cent was destroyed by fire in 2010. Hastings Pier Charity oversaw its repair and it reopened in April 2016.

From the 11th century, Hastings was one of the Cinque Ports, a group of 5 ports that were supposed to provide ships for the king in the time of war in return for certain privileges. However, this custom died out in the 15th century and a more modern navy was formed.
