Merseyside Leasing Did You Know?Merseyside is famous for its contribution to national popular culture, not only for entertainers and singers (including the Beatles) but also for two internationally honoured football (soccer) teams (Everton and Liverpool FC), the Grand National steeplechase, run at Aintree racecourse, and championship golf at Hoylake Merseyside spans 249 square miles (645 km2) of land. It borders the ceremonial counties of Lancashire (to the north-east), Greater Manchester (to the east), Cheshire (to the south and south-east) and the Irish Sea to the west. On April 1, 1974, the Local Government Act of 1972 gave rise to the creation of the new county of Merseyside, which took its name from the River Mersey and is located within the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.. Merseyside includes the historic port city of Liverpool and its wealth of historic and cultural attractions, there is a scenic coastline and beaches notably at Southport, New Brighton and West Kirby and plenty of open spaces allowing visitors to get away from it all and enjoy the best of the scenic countryside. Various attractions including Albert Dock, The Cavern Club, Merseyside Maritime Museum and Tate Liverpool. Other attractions include Southport Pier, Wirral Country Park and Ness Botanic Gardens. There are a number of historic buildings, castles, museums and galleries for visitors to explore in the area. Merseyside has a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff. Merseyside is joined by the neighbouring borough of Halton to form the Liverpool City Region, which utilises The Mersey Partnership as a development agency. Merseyside is also home to the Aintree Racecourse, which is perhaps best known for staging the infamous Grand National steeplechase each year. The course used is particularly demanding, with many competitors failing to complete the race. Plenty of famous bands, comedians, singers, and actors hail from this city. The Merseyside county council was abolished in 1986, and the districts became responsible for all services except police, fire, and civil defense, which are supervised jointly. It remains a ceremonial county under the Lieutenancies Act. Merseyside was created on 1 April 1974 from areas previously part of the administrative counties of Lancashire and Cheshire, along with the county boroughs of Birkenhead, Wallasey, Liverpool, Bootle, and St Helens.
