In the Middle Ages, Rotherham was an important market town. Rotherham was granted borough status in 1871. The town is known for its traditional red-brick buildings and historic architecture.

Rotherham was founded in the early Middle Ages. Its name is from Old English hām 'homestead, estate', meaning 'homestead on the Rother'. The river name is of Brittonic origin for 'main river', ro- 'over, chief' and 'water'.

In ancient times, Rotherham was famous for its manufacture of edge tools, and there are still iron and steel works on a large scale in its immediate vicinity, especially in its suburbs, Masbro' and the Holmes, both in the township of Kimberworth, in which there were mines of ironstone and two smelting furnaces.

With Town's outlook becoming more and more bleak with ever-mounting financial problems, a resolution was passed in March 1925 that Town would be wound up and a new club to be named Rotherham United was officially born on May 27, 1925.

The oldest secular building in Rotherham town centre, originally built as a town house in 1470. With Tudor and Victorian additions it later became the Three Cranes Inn public house and operated as such until 1907, when the licence was surrended.

Rotherham has an industrial past as a coal mining town as well as a major contributor to the steel industry. Today there's history, heritage and many places of interest to explore.

Located on Alma Road, the workhouse was in existence between 1838 and 1929 after which it became the Rotherham Public Assistance Institution, later known as The Mount. The infirmary became Moorgate General Hospital, which closed in 1980.

The Reytons, a four-piece indie group from Rotherham, claimed the number one position with their self-released album What's Rock And Roll? They feature in a top 10 alongside big name artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Elton John.

The Chuckle Brothers, Barry Elliott and Paul Elliott, were born in Rotherham. The comedy duo was most well known for their BBC children’s television programme ‘Chuckle Vision’. They were made honorary presidents of Rotherham United’s football club in 2007.

The 2019 period drama ‘Downton Abbey’ follows the lives of the Crawley family and their downstairs staff, set in a Yorkshire country estate. The ballroom scenes were filmed at Wentworth Woodhouse, a stately home situated in Rotherham.

Presenter James May spent his teenage years in South Yorkshire and attended Oakwood Comprehensive School in Rotherham. He was also a choirboy at Whiston Parish Church – strange we haven’t heard his dulcet tones while on Top Gear.

Meanwhile, during the 20th century, the steel industry continued to dominate the town. However, at the end of the 20th century, the traditional industries in Rotherham declined severely.
