Coventry Leasing Did You Know?Suffolk is a ceremonial county in the East of England and East Anglia. It is bordered by Norfolk to the north, the North Sea to the east, Essex to the south, and Cambridgeshire to the west. Ipswich is the largest settlement and the county town. The county has an area of 3,798 km² and a population of 758,556. Suffolk has the smallest pub. “Size matters not!” said Yoda and he knew a pearl of wisdom when he juxtaposed it. The Nutshell pub, at just 15ft by 7ft, opened its doors in 1867, having previously been a fruit shop. Come for the ickle-ness, stay for the weird Mummified Cat that they have on display In a display of Winkle picking to shame us all, Dean Gould of Felixstowe in Suffolk created a world record for the fastest Winkle picker in 1997 when he picked 50 shells in 1 minute 22.34 seconds. And that’s a record that has yet to be broken, over 20 years on. What have we been doing with our time? Famously aliens landed (well, not quite – they apparently hovered) in Suffolk. The “Rendlesham Forest Incident” is one of the most notorious UFO events in England and (though comprehensively debunked) is sometimes referred to as "Britain's Roswell". The truth is out there people. Renowned painters John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough were born within 10 miles of each other in Suffolk (not during the same time period we hasten to add). John Constable is particularly revered for his stunning landscapes of the Dedham Vale. Suffolk is noted for having been home to two of England's best regarded painters, Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable – the Stour Valley area is branded as "Constable Country" – and one of its most noted composers, Benjamin Britten. The county of Suffolk (Sudfole, Suthfolc, meaning 'southern folk') was formed from the south part of the kingdom of East Anglia which had been settled by the Angles in the latter half of the 5th century. The name Suffolk means 'southern folk' and comes from the Angles who settled here in the 5th century and created East Anglia with Norfolk. From the 14th to the 17th century, Suffolk was one of the most prosperous counties in the country Any list of famous people from Suffolk would be remiss to exclude Ed Sheeran. Sheeran is one of the world's biggest artists and he moved to Framlingham when he was a boy and went to Thomas Mills High School in the town. Otley Hall has long been regarded as the oldest house in Suffolk to have survived largely intact, with many rooms remaining unchanged for 500 years. The Hall is an impeccable example of late medieval architecture and is steeped in history. Most English counties have nicknames for people from that county, such as a Tyke from Yorkshire and a Yellowbelly from Lincolnshire. A traditional nickname for people from Suffolk is 'Fair-Maids' referring to the supposed beauty of its female inhabitants in the Middle Ages. Lavenham in Suffolk is widely acknowledged as the best example of a medieval wool town in England. In Tudor times, Lavenham was said to be the fourteenth wealthiest town in England, despite its small size.
