West Kennet Long Barrow near Silbury Hill close to Avebury, is a Neolithic tomb or barrow. It was built over five and a half thousand years ago. The delightful villages of Lacock and Castle Combe are famous Wiltshire beauty spots. Many will be familiar with Lacock as it’s the well-known setting for many films and TV series including Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Wolf Hall and Downton Abbey. Castle Combe is said to be the prettiest village in England! Amesbury is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is known for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is within the parish. The town is claimed to be the oldest occupied settlement in Great Britain, having been first settled around 8820 BC. Predominantly a rural county, the largest town in the county in terms of population is Swindon and the largest (and only) city is Salisbury. Wiltshire's county town is Trowbridge, in the west of the county. Did you know that the Wiltshire Cycleway, Regional Route 20, is 160 miles and takes in some of the county’s most spectacular scenery? It’s best to do in an anti-clockwise direction. There are also two National Cycle Routes passing through South Wiltshire, Numbers 24 and 45. Wiltshire is very lucky to have one of only two southern England Magna Carta Baron towns (and the only one in the Southwest) in Trowbridge, it’s County Town.
