The County of Wiltshire is a real treasure trove of interesting facts and legend.  Did you know…

The Wiltshire town of Calne can claim to be the birthplace of the famous The Wiltshire Cure – a way of curing bacon and ham that has made it legendary!  Which is probably why the local Lardy Cake is so good! 

Wiltshire is also known as Cider Country.  A tribute to the many orchards across Wiltshire producing apples that are transformed into a crisp, refreshing cider that is instantly recognisable.

Look out too for the Wiltshire Loaf – this cheese was created in Wiltshire and was particularly sought after in the 18th Century.  It even had a mention in Emma, the famous novel by Jane Austin!

Stonehenge is probably the most famous and oldest place in the area. The stones have been a feature of Salisbury Plain for thousands of years, since they were placed here by our prehistoric ancestors. West Kennet Long Barrow near Silbury Hill close to Avebury, is a Neolithic tomb or barrow.  It was built over five and a half thousand years ago.

The delightful villages of Lacock and Castle Combe are famous Wiltshire beauty spots. Many will be familiar with Lacock as it’s the well-known setting for many films and TV series including Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Wolf Hall and Downton Abbey.  Castle Combe is said to be the prettiest village in England!

Amesbury is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is known for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is within the parish. The town is claimed to be the oldest occupied settlement in Great Britain, having been first settled around 8820 BC.

Predominantly a rural county, the largest town in the county in terms of population is Swindon and the largest (and only) city is Salisbury. Wiltshire's county town is Trowbridge, in the west of the county.

Did you know that the Wiltshire Cycleway, Regional Route 20, is 160 miles and takes in some of the county’s most spectacular scenery? It’s best to do in an anti-clockwise direction. There are also two National Cycle Routes passing through South Wiltshire, Numbers 24 and 45.

Wiltshire is very lucky to have one of only two southern England Magna Carta Baron towns (and the only one in the Southwest) in Trowbridge, it’s County Town. Baron Henry was one 25 enforcer Barones elected to ensure King John stuck to the terms of this iconic document.!
