York Leasing Did You Know?York was founded in 71 AD when Cerialis and the Ninth Legion constructed a military fortress (castra) on flat ground above the River Ouse near its junction with the River Foss. The fortress was later rebuilt in stone, covered an area of 50 acres, and was inhabited by 6,000 soldiers. York has the largest Railway Museum in the world – why not take a trip on the renowned flying Scotsman or the Japanese bullet train (the only one of its kind outside of its home territory) Shambles is one of York's most famous landmarks and one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. With its cobbled streets and overhanging buildings, it is believed to have been the inspiration behind Diagon Alley from the movie adaptation of the Harry Potter series. Goathland railway station was used to film Hogsmeade railway station in the early Harry Potter films and the line filmed for Harry's journey. Part of the first Harry Potter film was filmed in York using two locations; unbeknownst to many people. The railway station was used in the first film instead of Kings Cross. The Romans knew it as Eboracum. To the Saxons it was Eoforwick. The Vikings, who came as invaders but stayed on in settlements, called it Jorvik. York's more recent history has also characterised the city. The city was founded in about AD 71 when the 5,000 men of the Ninth Legion marched from Lincoln and set up camp. Eboracum, as the Romans called York , was born. More than a quarter of a century had passed from the Romans establishing a province in southern Britain to their arrival. York's old City Walls are the most complete in England. They were built mainly in the 13th century on top of older earth banks. There are a few bits of dry moat left around the banks. The slopes are well known for their daffodils in March and April. Film star Clive Owen and pop impresario Pete Waterman were born in Coventry, while Labour politician Mo Mowlam, architect of the historic Northern Ireland peace accord, spent her childhood in the city. The gateways through the defences in York are called 'bars'. The name 'bar' has its origins in the bars, or simple gates, which were used to block the gateways to keep people out. Originally the bars were made of simple stone. Over the years they became increasingly more elaborate and complex. Archbishop Water de Gray ordered the construction of a Gothic structure starting in 1220. The Minster is built of oolite, or olitic limestone, from the Tadcaster area. The building was consecrated on July 3, 1472. Between the last two censuses, the average (median) age of York increased by one year, from 38 to 39 years of age. This area had a slightly lower average (median) age than Yorkshire and The Humber as a whole in 2021 (40 years) and a slightly lower average (median) age than England (40 years). No visit to York would be complete without a walk around the City Walls. At 3.4 kilometres long, the beautifully preserved walls are the longest medieval town walls in England.
