During World War II Vauxhall's factory in Luton switched from building cars to producing tanks to help with the war effort. The result was the Churchill tank and more than 5000 were manufactured.

The Vauxhall Corsa is always popular with new drivers as, like the Fiesta, it's a solid and reliable car, and there's lots of choice. In fact, Vauxhall's first supermini offering was called Nova, not Corsa, and launched in the UK in 1982. It wasn't until 1993 that British buyers saw its all-new replacement, known as 'Corsa', which came equipped with the latest in high-tech kit, such as a tape player.

As the electric version is the most powerful - the single motor makes 134bhp and 260Nm - it's also the quickest Vauxhall Corsa. 0-62mph takes just 7.6 seconds, while the instant throttle response means that, particularly at urban speeds, it feels much quicker than that.

When Vauxhall Motors were founded in 1857, they chose the de Breaute griffin as their logo and today, The Vauxhall Griffin pub bears it as name and brand. That's how the name 'Vauxhall' came to be.

Other previous Corsa owners include former world rally champion Colin McRae and the actor Sean Bean, both of whom owned a first-generation Nova. Bean bought his Nova for £100 from friends when his own car (a BMW) was stolen.
